KATYA LABOWE-STOLL

Katya Labowe-Stoll (b. 1999, CT) received her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2021 and lives in Los Angeles, CA.

Through drawing and oil painting, she explores what it means to mythologize objects and ideas and formulate new realities which you are then governed by. Organic lines and transparent washes formulate a world in which the characters and objects teeter between real and unreal, new and old. The artist describes scenes of figures bathing in an atmospheric post-flood world of defused colors, apple cores and clovers.

These “Bathers” lounge in a fluid substance. Their body language is still and idolic, but their hands and feet defy their stoicism revealing glimpses of a complex inner experience. The surrounding environment is composed of defused matter blurring the line between solid, liquid, and gas. What is real and what is imagined. The bathers arise from the same matter as their environment, inflated, they become fixtures of their landscape. These forms tether her to a point of origin. Together they explore a world post divine destruction as survivors, and grapple with the sensitivities, neurosis, burdens, and wonder of the human condition.
