Campbell McLean

Campbell McLean, born, raised, and still living in Boston, is a 2022 BFA graduate from MassArt's painting department. Working out of her shared studio in Boston's SOWA arts district. She has been the recipient of the Stephen D. Paine Scholarship (2021), as well as the Geroge Nick Award (2022). Her conspicuous portraits have been included in numerous local group shows including Alpha Gallery's annual "New Talent '' exhibition (2022) and Abigail Ogilvy's "Fresh faces" (2023)

Campbell's portraits and scenes serve to poke fun at the shortcomings of queer life through a sardonic and colorful lens, painting grotesque queer characters in control of varying situations, she can deconstruct the portrayal of queers as suburban, wimpy, and soft. In turn building a catalog of hard-working queer Americans, that mind their own business and blend in real nice with all the other Americans. By producing images that are tongue-in-cheek they can spark dialogue about queer representation through an arresting, blatant humor.
