Joerg Dressler
My work is driven by nature and how we perceive it. Disjointed personal experiences of the seen and unseen are reassembled creating a reality of its own. My work derives from a sincere dialogue between the representational and the abstract, the conceptual conscientiousness and pure spontaneity. In addition to my personal experiences in nature I draw inspiration from diverse sources. My vocabulary is acquired from a cross-section of art history: Romanticism, Impressionism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, Graphic Design and Photography. I am interested in the experimental and transformative act of painting; taking liberties with color, form, space, and movement, while carefully considering notions of balance, rhythm, disruption and the incomplete.
In my recent body of work, I am incorporating intimate depictions of landscape and nature and geometric shapes. I am aiming to inspire in the viewer a prolonged consideration of their own relationship with nature. Our direct and intimate exposure to the outdoors has decreased over time, resulting in what some call "nature appreciation deficit." Regaining a sense of appreciation of the natural world and its effect on the human psyche is now more important than ever.
Born in Hanau, Germany I received my MFA from the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach in 1994. Additionally, I studied at the École National Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, France. In 1996, I immigrated to the United States, living and working in Provincetown, Massachusetts and Miami Beach, Florida. Art residencies include the C-Scape Dune Shack Residency, Cape Cod National Seashores; Twenty Summers/Hawthorn Barn, Provincetown; Cape Cod Community College, West Barnstable: Peekaboo Studios, Miami Beach. In 2020, I was awarded the Mass Cultural Council Artist Fellowship Program: Finalist in painting. My work is included in the permanent collections of the Provincetown Art Association and Museum and the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay Art in New York.
