What if the ancient and future are interlinked? What is enlightenment and what would you sacrifice to attain it?
My work explores the murky middle ground between myth, dreams, and reality. I combine painting and collage to create an interior landscape, a new psychologically charged and unknown place the viewer may step into. Vague figures and small people (stand-ins for the viewer) interact with, run away from, or wander through these abstract, chaotic worlds. Shadowy figural shapes oscillate between presence and absence, knowing and not knowing. This parallels the interplay of seen and unseen forces in Eastern myth, and in particular Tibetan Buddhism and Balinese myth. My sculptures play with ideas of power, decay, fertility, and sacrifice, playing with the tension between the present object and its previous uses/unknown previous histories. What if the ancient and future are interlinked? What is enlightenment and what would you sacrifice to attain it?
