Anushka Divecha

Anushka is a Textile Designer and graduate of the MFA Textiles program from The Rhode Island School of Design.

Her work combines her love for the tactile and material properties of textiles, with color, pattern and illustration that she honed when she worked as a graphic designer. She has immense admiration for traditional techniques, craft and the artist's hand and is interested in how to utilize those techniques in more contemporary ways.  The inspiration for her recent work stems from nostalgia and memories of the sights, smells and experiences of her home back in India. Experiencing isolation during the pandemic, she wanted to create an immersive textile that brings warmth to a space through the magic of scent, while comforting the viewer and introducing them to a small aspect of her homeland. Her work “Aromatics" is an amalgamation of technology and handiwork. The textile is filled with spices commonly used in her family's Indian recipes. Designed with a complex woven structure to form a 3-D gauze weave, pockets were woven in to the fabric that can be filled.

Interactive, sensorial and comforting with the aroma of spices in the air- This textile is the materialisation of nostalgia through food.
