Emily Sofaly
Emily Sofaly (b. 1993, French/American) is a self-taught artist who lives and works in London. Her contemplative paintings broach notions of self and female otherness through explorations of storytelling, mysticism, and unseen worlds. Drawing from her poems and taking inspiration from her ‘inner landscape’, Sofaly often places her subject matters in natural and liminal spaces, imbuing them with an eerie, primordial quality. The female figures that populate her works exude raw, at times menacing power – a way for Sofaly to challenge the historical positioning of women as passive objects, while highlighting the complex and multi-faceted nature of the human experience.
