Kailey Coppens
During my childhood and adulthood, I moved frequently, living in over 15 houses and apartments in the past 26 years. My experiences in these temporary living situations have sparked a curiosity about what truly makes a home. In these spaces I find myself drawn to the colors, patterns, and materials that persist even as the walls around them change. In college, I followed my passion for fine art and pursued a degree in Painting and Interrelated Media from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. In my studies, I focused on found materials as a medium for my artwork. This experience not only influenced my painting style but showed me the connection that contemporary art has to everyday objects. After college, I worked as a Fabricator and Picture framer, which helped me further refine my skills and interest in working with discarded materials. These industries sought to produce a perfect product, and the waste generated in these efforts provided ample materials that still inspire me as an artist. I hope to use my work to initiate a conversation about how we unconsciously curate our living spaces by transforming and reimagining the function of everyday household materials.
