Claire Lee
Trained with both architectural and fine art background, I am an artist graduated from Central Saint Martins (UAL) and Sotheby’s Institute of Art; as well as a former member of Christie’s The Young Collectors Club in London.
My practice focuses on oil painting. In my work I draw inspiration from the Pronk Still Life genre of Dutch Golden Age. I have always been drawn toward the glamour, sumptuousness, and extravagance in it. My current series of works embark on a journey of responding and retelling these narratives from a feminist perspective. Flowers hold a central role in my exploration. I am fascinated by how flowers attract and employ insects for the use of reproduction. For me, flowers serve as powerful metaphors representing this interplay of beauty, delicacy, lust, and desire. In my painting process, I borrow elements and symbols from the Old Masters of Still Life. Through this recontextualization, by adopting this feminist lens, I seek to ignite dialogue, introspection, and a re-evaluation of our perception towards beauty, power, and desire.
