Caroline Absher: My painting studio is in Brooklyn, New York. I love the dance between figuration and abstraction. Recently, the paintings have constantly transformed. Each one teaches me a bit more than the last. Though I’ve painted my whole life, this period of momentum feels exciting.
My practice in oil painting is immediate and sure. Most of the painting happens very quickly. It is a truly joyful experience.
I am interested in gaze, the subconscious, gender identity, animals in a spiritual context, and feminine connection to nature. The figures in my paintings are modeled after women I love. My self portraits are ways of checking in with myself, and have been more prominent in recent years.Power in the gaze for me means that there is a quiet intensity in the energy coming from the work, and the figures somehow know what you’re thinking, or they know you, like they may be telepathic.
